Have You Discovered A Mice Infestation In Your New Home? Here's What You Should Do

Home & Garden Blog

No one wants to move into a new home only to find that it's the site of a mice infestation, but sometimes it happens for a variety of reasons — perhaps the previous tenants left food behind that attracted the rodents. What matters in this situation is to get it under control as quickly as possible. Here's what you need to do:

Identify the Entry Points

Look for any small openings or gaps in your walls, foundation, or roofline that mice might be using to enter your home. These could include holes around pipes, gaps in window or door frames, or cracks in the foundation.

Seal the Entry Points

Once you've identified the entry points, seal them up with steel wool, caulk, or another appropriate material to prevent more mice from entering your home.

Remove Food Sources

Mice are attracted to food, so it's important to eliminate any sources of food that they might be able to access. This includes keeping food in tightly sealed containers, cleaning up spills and crumbs, and storing trash in a sealed container.

Set Traps

If you have a small infestation of mice, setting traps may be an effective way to catch and remove them. There are several types of traps to choose from, including snap traps, glue traps, and live traps.

Clean and Disinfect

Once you've removed the mice from your home, be sure to clean and disinfect any areas where they have been present to prevent the spread of disease. This includes washing surfaces with hot, soapy water and using a disinfectant to kill any remaining bacteria or germs. Always wear disposable gloves when cleaning areas where rodents have been.

Remember to always follow the instructions on any pest control products you use, and take precautions to protect yourself and your family from the potential risks associated with handling pests or toxic chemicals. If you are unable to effectively control the mouse infestation on your own, or if you are concerned about the risk of disease, it may be best to call a pest control technician for professional assistance at this time. Keep in mind that the above advice is meant as a short-term solution only until you can schedule a visit with a local pest control company. You may be able to hold off a fledgling infestation for a time, but mice control is an ongoing process that requires a combination of strategies practiced consistently for ultimate effectiveness.
