Creating A Year-Round Outdoor Space

Home & Garden Blog

Outdoor spaces are a very important part of any home. They encourage recreational activities and are a great spot for family and friends to gather. While outdoor spaces are great, they may not be comfortable year-round. Often it may be too cold or too hot to spend time outside. It may also be difficult to enjoy outdoor spaces in parts of the country that see a lot of rain or snow. While there is nothing that can be done about the weather, there are a few things that can be done to make an outdoor space comfortable year-round.

Patio Covers

Adding a patio cover can make it easier to enjoy an outdoor space rain or shine. Patio covers can also help keep things more comfortable during the hot summer months by providing shade. For those who don't want to have to choose between sun or shade, an adjustable patio cover is a great choice. These patio covers can fold over to provide shade or fold up to allow sunlight in. Patio covers are also available in a multitude of styles and materials. It's possible to find a patio cover for nearly any type of patio or outdoor space.

Outdoor Fireplace

Keeping warm outside during the colder fall and winter months can be a challenge in many parts of the US. This is why it may be a good idea to install an outdoor fireplace or fire pit. A free standing outdoor fireplace or fire pit is a great spot to gather when it's chilly out. Outdoor fireplaces range in price from just a few hundred dollars for a simple chiminea to tens of thousands of dollars for a custom fireplace. Fire pits tend to be more affordable but custom fire pits can cost thousands of dollars.

Fans

Ceiling fans are a great addition to a porch or patio. They create air flow on hot days and are a great decorative element. Outdoor fans can be found to match any style outdoor space. The important thing to consider when choosing an outdoor fan is whether or not it can stand up to the elements. For outdoor spaces a ceiling fan that is UL listed for damp or wet locations is a must. Homeowners should also consider whether or not they are able to safely wire their outdoor space for an outdoor fan.

Creating a year-round outdoor space is possible. Patio cover, outdoor fireplaces, and fans can all help make an outdoor space feel comfortable no matter what the weather is like.
