How to Enclose Your Patio For Year Round Use

Home & Garden Blog

Have you been thinking about enclosing your patio? Perhaps you don't use it as much as you thought you would, or you realize that it would be a great additional room for your house. Now that warm weather is long gone, this might be the perfect time to bring some outdoor living right inside your home.

Hire a Contractor

Before you sign any papers, make sure you have the right contractors. Get recommendations from friends and find out how long the contractors have been in business. Do they have a portfolio of past work? Do they guarantee their services? Once you've decided that you have found the right people for the job, get everything in writing, including the price of the job, including materials, and the approximate date that it will be finished.

Select The Decor

Pour through decorating magazines for ideas, or visit model homes. Keeping a file of the looks you love most is very helpful.

  • Old Fashioned Decor For a shabby chic or country look, consider white wicker furniture with floral fabric on the cushions. Buy birdhouses! Don't just hang them, though. Nestle them on shelves, place them on table tops, and even peeking out of corners along with potted plants.
  • Festive Decor Think "eclectic." Dark wrought iron or rustic wooden furniture would be great in this kind of a setting. Look for home decor that could have been bought in Italy, Greece, Mexico or other foreign countries. Buy hanging metal bird houses and put artificial flowers and colorful pretend birds in them.
  • Traditional Decor Blend antiques with any furniture that you would use in a casual living room or family room. For accent pieces, consider using brass, pewter and ceramic pots together fill them with colorful flowers. Don't hesitate to use artificial ones, as there are gorgeous silk flowers that look like the real thing.

Decide on Doors

Will your room come off a living area, or your kitchen? Double doors are one excellent choice. Not only will that be beautiful, but you can open them up for entertaining. In addition, consider screen doors to go to the outside. Matching them to the first set will be a stunning look.

Another consideration is the purchase of security doors which would be used in conjunction with a regular door. These are especially nice on a gorgeous day when you want to let the fresh air enter your home. For information on patio screen doors, talk to companies such as Scott Screens.
